Everyone knows how important it is to eat healthy. But often we can not avoid to also take in harmful substances with our food, like pesticide residue within fruit and vegetables or the many additives in other foods. Food additives are substances that are deliberately added to food to fit their features (e.g. storage life, processibility, taste or appearance) to the wishes of the consumers and food producers.
Many food additives are suspected to provoke serious illnesses, allergies or even mental diseases. And not only that: Many products do not even contain what is written on the packing. For some additives, like sugar, there is a list with less harmful sounding synonyms like maltose, fructose or glucose.
Even though all ingredients have to be indicated on the label of the food product, in the order of content within the product, concrete quantities do not have to be mentioned. So it might happen that a raspberry yoghurt actually contains only half a raspberry. The rest often is sugar, flavor enhancer and aromas. Flavor enhancers are genetically modified microorganisms which support the taste of the product. This way the producers can produce much cheaper.
It is differentiated between natural and synthetic aromas. Natural does not have to mean that the fruit aroma originates from actual fruit. The labeling “natural” does only mean that the raw material derives from natural products. Many of these “natural” aromas are grown with the help of mushrooms, bacteria or sawdust.The natural aroma within raspberry yogurt consists actually of cedar wood oil (with all the chemical solvents from its production). Citric acid for example is another name for the fungus Rhizopus hodosus.
Many of these additives can in some cases provoke allergic reactions and are also suspected to increase the risk of cancer. If the tongue gets used to the artificial aromas it often even rejects the taste of real fruit.
At the moment there exist about 320 different additives which have an E-number. The “E” in this case stands for “Europe”.
The E-substances are classified as follows:
- colors (E 100-180) – provide appetizing appearance that promotes sales
- preservatives (E 200-298) – enhance storage life, are used to allow a prolonged time span for sale
- antioxidants (E 300-321) – make sure that food products keep taste and color for a long time
- acidity regulators and thickeners (E 322-418) – mixes substances that are normally unmixable (e.g. fat and water)
- humectants and flavor enhancers (E 620-650) – enhance the taste, the producers save expensive ingredients
- sweeteners (E 900-1520) – sweeten especially drinks and diet products
Although many producers have realized that most of the consumers do not react very positively to the E-names – this is why instead of writing “E414” on the packing they now refer straight away to “Xanthan”.
All consumers should avoid these E-numbers, especially if they often eat products which include them or if they have an unbalanced diet.The reason: The absorption of the mineral nutrients is hindered, the metabolism is harmed.
Pesticides and Insecticides:
Tons of herbicides, insecticides and fungicides are used on the fields and they contaminate the ground and the plants. These substances are used to fight annoying insects, weed and fungus on fruits and vegetables. They are effective and poisonous not only for the targets but also for our health, for animals and for the whole ecological system.
These chemical poisons will not kill us if we eat them once and we do not feel them within us directly, but if we are permanently consuming contaminated food, they will accumulate within our bodies, they will poison our organism and cause disease. Some pesticides can cause allergies, damage the hormonal balance and impair fertility and the nervous system. They are stored within the fat cells and can cause overweight. Four percent of the Europe-wide approved pesticides are suspected to be carcinogenic. So healthy fruit and vegetables are becoming harmful to health. Even organic foods may be contaminated with environmental pollutants from exhaust fumes or bacteria and it often does not help to simply wash them.
